Our Pillow Was Born to Address the Heart Hospital's Concerns
Our EZ-Clean™ Sanitary Solution Can Significantly Improve Patient Safety by Reducing the Infection Risk.
In 2016 when a top heart hospital requested us to develop a new cough pillow together, our top priority was to reduce the infection risk caused by traditional cloth cough pillows. The cloth pillows the hospital had used for years are the same kind of cloth cough pillows on the market that are using in hundreds of medical centers across the USA. The cloth pillow has a fabric surface and is filled with fiberfill, both are materials that allow for germs to breed and are hard for nurses to clean. The concern and request from the partner hospital guided us the entire time and helped us to set Patient Safety as the # 1 Goal. We decided to achieve our goal by innovating at every opportunity. We developed much know-how including the EZ-Clean™ Sanitary Solution, which is patent pending. The EZ-Clean™ Solution Starts with an Innovative Design and Construction.

Each EZ-Clean™ Cough Pillow has an inner pillow and outer cover.

What if Liquid Gets on the Pillow?

In a patient room, a weak patient, particularly in the early recovery stages following a vital operation, cannot sufficiently control their bodily fluids such as, vomits, mucus even bloods as regular people. It’s easy to imagine a mess happening at any time.

Fortunately, the mess, drinks, or other liquids won’t be able to penetrate our pillow’s waterproof vinyl and won’t leak inside. The inner pillow won’t get wet or messed and no virus can penetrate the outer cover. It is effortless and costs nothing to keep our inner pillow dry. What if this happens to a porous cloth pillow? The mess and liquid are sure to seep inside or run between the stitches before anyone can react. Outside germs are likely to breed on the surface and inside the fiberfill which can be dangerous for any patient, particularly for those who have a weak or compromised immune system.

When the mess, grime, or other liquids get on our waterproof outer cover, they will stay outside, giving busy nurses and doctors more time to react. To clean the mess on the smooth vinyl surface, anyone can wipe it with a piece of cloth or tissue and then spray the surface with a hospital-grade disinfectant in the patient room. After being disinfected our vinyl pillows can be reused safely. The service is not interrupted and a back-up pillow is not needed. Is it easy enough to clean our vinyl pillow?

How do medical facilities handle a messy cloth pillow? It is definitely unsafe to let the patient continue using a messy pillow. Should you try to wipe the mess off of the cloth pillow? Unfortunately, you cannot wipe the mess that has already leaked inside. You can’t even wipe the mess that has soaked into the threads or sunken between the weaves. It is a bad idea to put the messy cloth pillow aside and let it dry by itself for later reuse because germs can breed inside the pillow very quickly. The cloth pillows must be sent to the laundry room (so backup pillows are required) for washing and drying, and then redistributed to the patient rooms. As you can tell, this is a time-consuming process.

What if Complete Sterilization is Needed?

All cloth pillows on the market are designed as bulky one-piece pillows. A regular washing machine can handle 2-3 pieces per load. To make it worse, the fiberfill filling gets hardened and stacked by its third wash. A stacked pillow loses its support function which is why many hospitals and other medical centers are struggling to decide whether they should wash or trash the messy pillows. Some medical facilities simply give messy cloth pillows to non-profit organizations. In practice, the cough pillows are a huge cost (or insurance bill) that keeps growing. Good news! Our EZ-Clean™ Cough Pillow offers an easy, economical, and effective solution. Our pillow’s outer cover is removable which means that instead of washing the bulky pillow, you can remove the outer covers and wash and dry them up to 20 pieces per a load of a regular washing machine. Look! A nurse can hold 20 outer covers and send them to the laundry room (Can a nurse hold 20 cloth pillows? These are important questions!). After being washed and dried, the outer covers can be put onto any inner pillows to continue the service – our covers are communal! Have you received a vinyl cough pillow as a gift? Wash the cover at home by hand or with a machine. You can dry it on a low heat setting or hang dry it quickly.

Our vinyl pillow covers stay intact through at least 15 wash cycles while competitive cloth pillows get stacked by their 3rd wash, as discussed above. The print and writing on our vinyl cover won’t be destroyed in the washing and drying process while the ink on the cloth pillows gets faded very quickly.
Opening System: A Quick Demo

An opening system has been added to the outer cover to make the inner pillow and outer cover removable from each other and build a base for the EZ-Clean Sanitary Solution to work.

In order to ensure safety, the opening system is designed with extra measures implemented. First, the opening was placed on the back of the cover since normally most of the messes won’t end up on the backside. Second, the opening is zipper controlled and the two zipper ends are sealed with cloth covers. Third, an attractive protective flap that is also made of waterproof vinyl conceals the zippered opening. And the last, the flap is built with the mouth downward so liquid can run over the flap but not into the opening. All of these measures help to keep the inner pillow dry

In addition to enhancing the waterproofing, our opening system design also minimizes access to the zipper and protects everyone. The system makes it impossible for the patients to get injured or infected by the zipper or the protective flap. The opening system also prevents children from reaching inside the inner pillow or its inner-contents. Without an adult's guide and physical help, children are unable to discover the opening, lift up the tight flap, locate the zipper, unzip it, pull out the inner pillow, and cut the quality fabric surface of the inner pillow.

Our EZ-Clean™ Cough Pillows have no problem standing up to the toughest CPSIA testing which is why we are proud to work with top hospitals, surgery centers, and medical facilities across the country.
Our EZ-Clean™ Cough Pillows are tested by a third party that is recognized in the USA as having passed all six tests that include mechanical and physical properties, flammability, heavy metals, lead content, and phthalate content. The test report can be made available upon request.
